If our periodic client spotlights seem to be shining more frequently, don’t blame us. There are simply too many exceptional tales from happy retirees that need to be shared. The latest couple to deserve notoriety are Dallas and Lisa, as they recently embarked upon an unforgettable trip to Italy.
Lisa retired from the Bell System in 2006 and Dallas a year later, timing that was influenced by an early package offer after the “new” AT&T bought out the company. No longer tied to their desks, they jumped at an invitation from their daughter Candice for an Italian adventure. Candice and her husband Collins had honeymooned there nearly 20 years prior and had always wanted to return with Dallas and Lisa.
The first step was to research and prioritize which destinations to visit. This was particularly fun to do with their two teenage grandsons, Trey and Chase, who they had helped with some school projects about cities and landmarks. Once the itinerary was agreed upon as a family, they all booked airline and train travel, purchased euros, and got ready for the whirlwind trip that would take them to four cities in 10 days.

The Locations
Venice was their first stop, and what a way to start things off—a city built on water! They recommend staying near the Grand Canal. Riding in a water taxi is a unique experience, but they run 90 to 120 euros per trip, and in general, travel beyond walking distance can be quite expensive.
While in Venice, they visited St. Marks Church and the Palazzo Ducale Museum San Marco.
Their second stop was Florence. They visited the Galleria Museum and saw the famous statue of David by Michelangelo.
They went to the Tower of Pisa, a leather factory, and even captured some local flare at the markets.
Next up was Sorrento. Their charming boutique hotel was so tucked away that the taxi driver couldn’t even drive to the door. As they rolled their luggage up the cobblestone street, the staff greeted them with authentic Italian charm. Sorrento was much more relaxed than the other cities, and they enjoyed a fun tour of the Isle of Capri by boat and a swim in the famous blue water. They took a quick Uber to Pompeii and caught a glimpse of a still active and smoking Mount Vesuvius.

Their final destination was the capital city of Rome, and it did not disappoint. From the Colosseum to the Forum, the Pantheon, the Vatican, St. Peters Basilica, and the Sistine Chapel, they hit as many amazing sights as possible. They even squeezed in a visit to the Hard Rock Cafe Rome, which made their grandsons happy. As the coup de grâce on their final day, their daughter surprised them with a photo shoot. It was a true capstone to document a trip they will never forget!

Each city had its own unique charm and they left wishing they had had more time in each. Unsurprisingly, the food was fabulous, and the history and artistry were beyond compare, but the best part was spending time with their family.
Planning A Trip to Italy? Consider These Takeaways
Despite their research, the trip coincided with the Italian summer feast of Ferragosto, the most awaited holiday of the summer. Most of Italy was off work and school during this time, which meant the crowds were intense, but Dallas and Lisa didn’t let that stop them. With a bit more patience, they managed to enjoy their sought-after attractions despite the throngs of others doing the same.
The second challenge was the heat. Dallas and Lisa recommend that anyone visiting that part of Italy in the summer dress very cool and bring a personal fan if possible. Along a similar line, make sure to pack light. Dallas and Lisa traveled by train between cities, bringing all their luggage each time. By the end, they were ready to nominate the inventor of “roller suitcases” for a Nobel Prize. Remember that anything you bring will be up to you to transport.
Looking Ahead
Dallas and Lisa had such a terrific time that they’re already saving for their next trip to Italy for their 50th anniversary! This time, they want to visit Tuscany.
Retirement has been the best time of Dallas and Lisa’s lives. They highly recommend people take the opportunity to celebrate life with the people they love most. In their case, a trip to Italy with their daughter and grandkids will live forever in their hearts.
